Costa Rica Tarrazu


With a spicy, rich aroma and sharp acidity, Costa Rican Tarrazu is a full-bodied cup with just a hint of natural smokiness and delivers a sweetly smooth, clean finish. Coast Rica is bisected by a series of volcanic mountain chains, which creates a high altitude plain with costal lowlands in the center of the country. The resulting topography yields the perfect conditions for Costa Rica’s coffee crop to flourish. Similar to Guatemalan growing regions, Costa Rica harvests its crop at altitudes over 3,900 feet. Harvesting Costa Rican Tarrazu coffee occurs from December through February. The coffee is collected, hand-washed, and drum dried. Over a century ago, it was a Costa Rican mandate for every family to grow several coffee bushes on their land. Large plots were given to those willing to devote themselves to the cultivation of this crop. Among them was Manuel Rojas Arias, a successful coffee grower who inspired other farmers to convert their own sugar plantations into coffee farms.
